The Woman Who Sent Astronauts to Space

Johnson’s calculations were instrumental in John Glenn’s orbital flight in 1962, ensuring its safety and success. At a time when computers were still new, Glenn personally requested that she double-check the numbers before his mission, trusting her expertise over the machine. Her work laid the foundation for future space exploration, including the Apollo missions that landed men on the moon.

Katherine Johnson’s contributions earned her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015, the highest civilian honor in the United States. Her life was later celebrated in the book and film Hidden Figures, bringing her incredible story to the world.
