Rosalind Franklin was born in 1920 in London, into a family that valued education and public service. Demonstrating a keen intellect from an early age, Franklin pursued science, eventually specializing in physical chemistry. She attended Newnham College, Cambridge, where she honed her skills in X-ray crystallography, a technique that would later become central to her groundbreaking work.
